Seek urgent care for bleeding, severe pain, leaking fluid, fever, severe headache with vision changes, sudden swelling, severe shortness of breath, or a clear decrease in fetal movement after movement has become regular. Do not wait for routine testing appointments in these situations.

Genetic counseling during pregnancy may be useful when there is a family history of a genetic condition, consanguinity with risk factors, a high-risk screening result, an ultrasound finding, a previous pregnancy affected by a genetic or chromosomal condition, or when the family needs clearer explanation of options.
Genetic counseling does not mean there is definitely a problem. It helps explain probabilities, the limits of testing, available options, and what results may mean for the current pregnancy or future pregnancies.

Informed decision-making does not mean refusing tests, and it does not mean accepting everything without explanation. The goal is shared decision-making that respects privacy, values, and the clinician’s care plan.
An abnormal result does not always mean a confirmed problem. Some results need repeating, some need specialist ultrasound, and some need counseling or diagnostic testing. Avoid interpreting results from the internet alone or making quick decisions before speaking with your clinician.
If a result causes anxiety, ask for a clear explanation: What is the chance involved? What is the next step? How accurate is this test? When will the final result be available? Who should follow the result?
Prenatal testing supports early follow-up and better planning, but it is most useful when the difference between screening and diagnosis is clear. Ask about the purpose, timing, and limits of each test, and discuss results with your care provider instead of relying on fear or self-interpretation.
