- Fasting is not required, since the sample is hair.
- Gather a small strand (0.5-1 gram) of hair from the back of the head, as close to the scalp as possible (roots). A length of 3-4 cm is ideal.
- Avoid permanent chemical hair dyes and straightening treatments for at least 8 weeks (2 months) before the sample is taken. Regular shampoo and conditioner are permitted.
- If the hair is very short, underarm or pubic hair can be used after consulting the laboratory, noting that growth and deposition rates may vary.
- Inform the laboratory about the occupation and any known occupational exposure to metals.
