A qualitative immunohistochemical (IHC) assay using a monoclonal antibody against the protein P40 (also known as ΔNp63), a short isoform of the p63 protein. It aims to detect nuclear expression of P40, a highly sensitive and specific marker for determining the squamous origin of cells, particularly in lung and head and neck cancers.

Conditions & Notices
- Basic requirement: Availability of FFPE tissue sections of the tumor, with clearly defined tumorous areas.
- This test is routinely ordered with the TTF-1 marker (a marker for adenocarcinoma) as part of the standard panel for classifying non-small cell lung cancer. The dual interpretation (P40 and TTF-1) is the basis.
- The examination must be preceded by a preliminary histological diagnosis (H&E) showing non-small cell carcinoma.
