- Sample type: Depends on the suspected site of infection.
- Pulmonary tuberculosis (most common): Three deep morning sputum samples collected on consecutive days in sterile containers. Alternative: gastric lavage (for children) or bronchial lavage.
- Extrapulmonary tuberculosis: Cerebrospinal fluid, urine (morning urine sample for 3 days), biopsy tissue, or pleural fluid.
- Sample safety and transport: Samples must be collected sterilely and sent to the laboratory as quickly as possible. If transport is delayed by more than one hour, they must be refrigerated (2-8°C).
