- For skin samples: Collect the sample from the base of a fresh (punctured) vesicle using a sterile swab and place it in a suitable viral transport medium.
- For cerebrospinal fluid samples: Collect in a sterile container and send immediately to the laboratory.
- Avoid using antiviral creams or ointments on skin lesions before collecting the sample, as they may reduce the amount of detectable virus.
