  • Sample type: Depends on the suspected site of infection.
  • Pulmonary tuberculosis: A deep sputum sample (preferably two, one in the morning) is collected in a sterile container. Alternatives: gastric lavage (for children), bronchial lavage.
  • Extrapulmonary tuberculosis: Cerebrospinal fluid, pleural fluid, biopsy tissue, or other depending on the case.
  • Timing: The sample should be collected before starting anti-tuberculosis treatment for best accuracy. If the patient is on treatment, the laboratory must be informed.
  • The sample must be transported to the laboratory quickly and preserved according to its instructions.
