  • Routine fasting is not required, but it is preferable to fast for 8-12 hours to avoid interference from lipids in the plasma (Lipemia).
  • The effect of drugs and hormones:
  • The test should be performed before starting warfarin treatment, or 2-3 weeks after stopping it.
  • The doctor should be informed if the patient is pregnant or taking hormonal contraceptives, as this information will be taken into account when interpreting the result (the test is usually requested after these periods have ended to obtain the baseline level).
  • Sample required: Whole blood plasma with sodium citrate anticoagulant (light blue tube). The plasma must be rapidly centrifuged (within 1 hour) and frozen if not analyzed immediately.
