- Fasting is not required before the procedure.
- No creams or ointments (antifungal, cortisone, or moisturizers) should be applied to the suspected area for at least 3-5 days prior to taking the sample, as they may reduce the number of fungi and lead to a false negative result.
- The patient should not wash or scratch the affected area excessively immediately before the examination.
- The sample is taken by a doctor or specialist technician by scraping the active edge of the skin lesion or trimming part of the infected nail using a sterile instrument.
