- Fasting is not required, but the sample must be taken before the next dose of factor VIII (at least 48-72 hours after the last therapeutic dose) to avoid interference with the therapeutic factor in the sample and to obtain an accurate result of the true inhibitor level.
- Blood is drawn into a tube containing sodium citrate (blue tube).
- The laboratory must be informed of the date and time of the last dose of Factor VIII received.
- The doctor may request a re-examination for confirmation if the result is positive for the first time.
