Anaerobic Blood Culture | Lahalak Medical Platform

A vital test for critical cases and persistent fever, detecting bacteria that thrive without oxygen. It helps identify the optimal antibiotic to treat sepsis and deep-seated infections effectively.

Scientific name: Anaerobic Blood Culture

Anaerobic blood culture is a microbiological test performed on a blood sample cultured in a special oxygen-free nutrient medium designed for the growth and multiplication of obligate anaerobic bacteria. It aims to isolate and identify bacteria that cause bacteremia or sepsis and cannot be detected by conventional aerobic culture methods.

Medical Service Information

Conditions & Notices

  • Fasting is not required, but it is preferable to take the sample before starting antibiotics if possible, because they may prevent bacterial growth and lead to a false negative result.
  • Blood is drawn in a very sterile and precise manner to prevent contamination of the sample with skin bacteria, by disinfecting the skin with a special solution (such as chlorhexidine).
  • A sufficient blood sample (usually 20-30 ml for adults) is drawn and distributed into special blood culture containers (usually anaerobic and aerobic together).
  • The laboratory must be informed of the name of any antibiotics the patient is taking.
