Carnitine Energy Levels Test - Total and Free Carnitine Test

Two laboratory tests measure the concentration of total carnitine and free carnitine in blood serum. Carnitine is an amino acid-like compound essential for transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for conversion into energy. It is used to diagnose and monitor primary (genetic) or secondary carnitine deficiency and fatty acid oxidation disorders.
