The serum amyloid A protein (SAP) test is a quantitative measurement of the level of this acute phase reactive protein (APR) in the blood. SAA is primarily produced in the liver in response to inflammatory signals (cytokines such as interleukin-1 and interleukin-6). Its levels rise rapidly and significantly (hundreds to thousands of times) during acute inflammation, active chronic inflammation, and some tumors. It modulates the immune response and directs immune cells to the site of inflammation.
