This test uses Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology for the qualitative (and sometimes quantitative/typing) detection of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in clinical samples (e.g., cervical swabs, swabs from other sites, or tissues). The test can be specific for certain types (e.g., types 16 and 18 only) or comprehensive for a wide range of high-risk types (e.g., 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68). DNA detection indicates an active infection.
