Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is found in high concentrations in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas, but its elevation in the blood is primarily due to the liver and bile ducts. It is significantly elevated in alcoholic liver disease and obstructive bile duct disease. It is often ordered along with other liver enzymes (such as ALT and ALP) to help determine the cause of their elevation, as elevated GGT with ALP suggests a problem in the liver or bile ducts.
