The aldolase test is a quantitative measurement of the intracellular level of this enzyme in blood serum. Aldolase belongs to the glycolysis enzyme group, catalyzing the breakdown of fructose-1,6-diphosphate. It is found in high concentrations in skeletal muscle, heart, and liver tissues. When these cells, particularly muscle cells, are damaged, aldolase leaks into the bloodstream, making it a serological marker (albeit not very specific) for muscle cell damage and inflammatory muscle diseases.
