A thorough histopathological examination of a medium- to large-sized surgically obtained tissue specimen (often excisional or partial excision) is performed. The specimen is sectioned and fixed in 3 to 4 cassettes (paraffin molds) to represent different areas of the lesion (center, periphery, margins). This allows for a detailed examination of the histological characteristics, grade, depth of invasion, condition of the surgical margins, and relationship to surrounding tissues.
