Non-gynecological liquid cytology (NON-LBC) is the application of thin-layer cytology (TLC), originally used in cervical smears, to cytological samples taken from other sites in the body. These samples include respiratory swabs (such as sputum or bronchial lavage), body fluids (such as pleural, peritoneal, or articular fluid), urine, gastrointestinal swabs or lavages, and fine-needle aspiration from the thyroid gland or other masses. The sample is placed in a special preservative solution and then processed in the laboratory to remove contaminating materials (such as mucus and blood) and deposit a thin layer of cells onto a slide, thus improving the quality of microscopic examination.
