The serum free light chain assay (sFLC) is a quantitative measurement of the levels of free kappa (κ) and lambda (λ) light chains in blood serum. These chains are produced as byproducts during antibody (immunoglobulin) synthesis by plasma cells. Measuring each chain individually and calculating their ratio (κ/λ) helps detect monoclonal disorders of plasma cells, where one chain is elevated while the other is decreased.
