A laboratory package assists in assessing the inflammatory status of asthma patients. The package focuses on measuring non-specific indicators of systemic inflammation: erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), which measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a tube over one hour; an elevated ESR reflects systemic inflammation; and C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute-phase protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation, which rises rapidly with acute inflammation. This is complemented by a complete blood count (CBC) to assess the white blood cell count (which may be elevated with inflammation or infection) and to examine eosinophils, which play a key role in allergic asthma inflammation.
