- The sample must be taken by a medical professional (doctor or nurse) to ensure it is collected from the correct location and in a properly sterile manner.
- It is preferable to take the sample before starting antibiotic treatment, or if the patient is taking them, the laboratory should be informed of their type and dosage.
- Do not apply any antibiotic ointments or creams to the wound.
- The sample is transported in a sterile transport medium to the laboratory as quickly as possible.
