Medical Service Information

What does this test measure?

  • 1. Post-void Residual Volume Measurement: The amount of urine left in the bladder after urination is measured using ultrasound or a small catheter.
  • 2. Uroflowmetry: The amount and speed of urine flow during urination are measured using a special device.
  • 3. Cystometry: Bladder pressure is measured during the filling of the bladder with fluids and during urination using a catheter equipped with a pressure-measuring device.
  • 4. Pressure-flow Study: The relationship between bladder pressure and urine flow during urination is measured.
  • 5. Electromyography: The electrical activity of the muscles surrounding the urethra and bladder is measured to determine how these muscles function during urination.

Indications for Use

  • 1- Evaluation of Urinary Symptoms: Such as frequent urination, nocturia (nighttime urination), or difficulty urinating.
  • 2- Diagnosis of Incontinence: To determine whether the cause is weakness in the bladder or urethral muscles.
  • 3- Diagnosis of Neurogenic Bladder Issues: Especially in cases of multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries.
  • 4- Pre-surgical Evaluation: To check bladder function before undergoing surgeries related to the bladder or urethra.

Procedures

  • 1- Preparation: The patient may be asked to drink a specific amount of fluids before the test and to empty the bladder completely.
  • 2- Catheter Insertion: Small catheters are inserted into the bladder through the urethra to measure pressure and fill the bladder with warm fluid.
  • 3- Filling and Voiding: The bladder is gradually filled while pressure is measured, and the patient is then asked to urinate into a special device to measure the flow.

Possible Complications

  • Mild Discomfort: The patient may experience some discomfort when the catheter is inserted. Infection: There is a small risk of urinary tract infection, but this is rare and can be treated with antibiotics if needed.

Is the test painful?

  • Urodynamic Testing is usually not painful, but it can cause some discomfort. The patient may feel some pressure or discomfort when the catheter is inserted into the bladder or when the bladder is filled with fluid during the test. However, doctors typically use lubricants and local anesthesia to minimize this discomfort.
