- Fasting is not required. The sample can be taken at any time of day.
- A complete blood count (CBC) test should be available to interpret the result, because the assessment of reticulocytes depends on knowing the level of hemoglobin or hematocrit.
- The sample is drawn into a tube containing an anticoagulant (EDTA).
- The dyes used (such as cresyl blue bio-dye) and microscopic counting are considered reference methods, but automated counting devices offer high accuracy and speed.
