- Fasting is not required. The sample should be collected from the base of an active ulcer or from fluid from a vesicle using the highest degree of sterility to avoid contamination.
- For women, a cervical smear can be taken as part of the examination. Douching or using creams should be avoided for 24 hours prior to the examination.
- The sample should be placed in viral transport medium or a sterile dry tube and sent to the laboratory promptly.
