  • Fasting is not required, as the sample is the nails.
  • Fingernails or toenails should be trimmed (toenails are preferred due to their long history), and the clippings placed in the designated container. The quantity required is usually equivalent to trimming all the fingernails on one hand.
  • Avoid nail polish (gel or regular) for at least two weeks before taking the sample.
  • Clean your nails thoroughly with soap and water and dry them before clipping. Do not use nail polish remover (acetone) or any alcohol on the day of sample collection.
  • Inform the laboratory if the patient works in a profession that deals with metals (e.g., welding, printing).
