- Fasting is not required, since the sample is hair and not blood.
- A small strand (0.5-1 gram) of hair should be cut from the back of the scalp (the nape of the head) as close to the skin (roots). A length of 3-4 cm is ideal.
- Avoid permanent hair dyes and chemical straightening for at least 8 weeks (2 months) before the sample is taken. Regular shampoo is permitted.
- If the hair is too short or shaved, underarm or pubic hair can be used after consulting the laboratory, noting that growth and deposition rates may vary.
