- Fasting is not routinely required before the test is performed.
- It is preferable to draw the sample in the morning (between 8-10 am) if possible, because thyroid hormone levels may show slight fluctuations throughout the day.
- The doctor or laboratory should be informed of all medications and supplements being taken, especially:
- Thyroid medication (levothyroxine): The dose should be taken after the sample is drawn, unless otherwise directed by the doctor.
- Birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy.
- Medications containing biotin (vitamin B7) in high doses should be discontinued for several days before testing because they may interfere with some measurement methods.
