Conditions & Notices

  • The timing of the sample collection is crucial: blood should be drawn during the parasite's nocturnal activity period, usually between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., unless a species with daytime activity is suspected.
  • Fasting is not required before taking the sample, but it is preferable to avoid fatty meals immediately before the examination.
  • You should inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as some medications (such as diethylbazine) may temporarily reduce the number of microfilariae in the blood.
  • The microscopic slides (film) must be prepared and stained with Giemsa stain in the laboratory as soon as possible after the blood is drawn to ensure that the parasite's shape is preserved.
