A qualitative and/or quantitative test to detect the presence of immunoglobulin monomeric light chains (either kappa or lambda) in urine, also known as Bence Jones protein. These free light chains are produced in excess by cancerous plasma cells in myeloproliferative disorders and are excreted in the urine, where they can damage the kidneys.

  • The ideal sample type: a concentrated 24-hour urine sample. All urine should be collected within 24 hours in a large, clean container with a preservative (provided by laboratories) and kept refrigerated (in a refrigerator).
  • Alternative: A first morning urine sample (concentrated sample) can be used if the test is qualitative (for screening), but it is less accurate for quantitative follow-up.
  • The sample must be kept free from contamination by feces or vaginal secretions.
