Medical Service Information

Purpose Test

  • Assessment of cardiovascular risk associated with obesity by measuring levels of LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol
  • Detection of diabetes or prediabetes closely associated with obesity, using two precise measures (fasting glucose and HbA1c)
  • Assistance in diagnosing metabolic syndrome which is a cluster of conditions (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high triglycerides, low HDL, and central obesity) that significantly increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes
  • Providing an initial laboratory database before starting any weight loss program or medical treatment to track progress and evaluate treatment effectiveness

Recommended groups

  • Individuals with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) or overweight (BMI ≥ 25) with abdominal fat accumulation
  • Individuals with a family history of type 2 diabetes or early heart disease
  • Patients planning to start a dietary or medical weight loss program or prior to bariatric surgery
  • Individuals with other risk factors such as high blood pressure
  • Elderly individuals at risk of accumulating metabolic risk factors

Symptoms indicative

  • Overweight or obvious obesity especially if the weight is concentrated in the abdominal area (belly fat)
  • Strong family history of diabetes or heart disease
  • Symptoms that may indicate high blood sugar such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained fatigue (although prediabetes usually causes no symptoms)
  • As a routine health check for anyone with obesity, even in the absence of other symptoms

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • What is metabolic syndrome and how is it diagnosed? Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of 5 risk factors, and the presence of at least 3 of them diagnoses the syndrome Large waist circumference (ethnicity- and sex-specific) Elevated triglycerides (≥ 150 mg/dL) Low HDL cholesterol (< 40 in men, < 50 in women) High blood pressure (≥ 130/85 mmHg) Elevated fasting blood glucose (≥ 100 mg/dL) This panel directly measures 3 of these parameters (triglycerides, HDL, fasting glucose) and highlights the other risks
  • Large waist circumference (ethnicity- and sex-specific)
  • Elevated triglycerides (≥ 150 mg/dL)
  • Low HDL cholesterol (< 40 in men, < 50 in women)
  • High blood pressure (≥ 130/85 mmHg)
  • Elevated fasting blood glucose (≥ 100 mg/dL)

Normal Levels

  • Fasting glucose: normal < 100 mg/dL
  • Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c): normal < 5.7%
  • LDL cholesterol: optimal level < 100 mg/dL, target may be < 70 for patients with diabetes or heart disease
  • HDL cholesterol: target > 40 mg/dL for men and > 50 mg/dL for women
  • Triglycerides: target < 150 mg/dL

Conditions & Notices

  • Mandatory fasting: You must fast for 10-12 hours before the sample is taken. This is necessary to obtain accurate fasting blood sugar and triglyceride results. Only water is permitted during the fasting period.
  • Avoid alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test, as it severely affects triglyceride levels.
  • Medication adherence: Consult your doctor about your diabetes or cholesterol medications on the morning of the test. Generally, you should not take your morning diabetes medication before the blood sample is drawn to avoid hypoglycemia. Cholesterol medications can be continued.
  • Physical activity: Avoid strenuous exercise 24 hours before the examination.
