Purpose of the Procedure

  • Evaluate the volume of fluid surrounding the fetus.
  • Detect low amniotic fluid levels (Oligohydramnios).
  • Detect excessive amniotic fluid levels (Polyhydramnios).

How the Test is Performed

  • The uterus is divided into four imaginary quadrants.
  • Ultrasound measures the deepest vertical pocket of fluid in each quadrant.
  • The measurements are summed to calculate the total Index (AFI).

When is it Recommended?

  • If the abdomen size is smaller or larger than expected for gestational age.
  • High-risk pregnancies or maternal diabetes.
  • Decreased fetal movement reported by the mother.
