- Accurate 24-hour urine collection: This is essential. Begin by emptying your bladder first thing in the morning (e.g., at 8 a.m.) without saving this sample. Then, collect all urine over the next 24 hours in the designated container, finishing with the first urine sample of the following morning at the same time. Keep the container refrigerated throughout the collection and transport process.
- Diet: Follow your doctor's instructions regarding sodium (salt) intake. A normal, consistent amount is usually required for several days before and during the procedure.
