- Fasting: Instructions depend on the reason for the test. If it is part of an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), fasting for 8–12 hours is required before drinking the glucose solution. If it is to monitor a normal meal in a diabetic patient, initial fasting may not be necessary. The doctor's or laboratory's instructions should be followed precisely.
- Meal and sample timing: Record the exact time the meal or solution is started. The sample must be taken exactly 120 minutes (two hours) after that time.
- Activity: Remain at rest during the testing period. No smoking.
