The Ziehl-Neelsen stain is a histological and bacteriological staining technique used to detect acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis (which causes tuberculosis) and other mycobacteria. It relies on the property of these bacteria to resist decolorization by acids due to their complex lipid cell wall structure, which allows them to retain the primary red stain (fushin) and appear clearly under a microscope.
