A molecular genetic test detects microdeletions in critical regions of the long arm of the Y chromosome (Yq11), known as the azoospermia factor (AZF) regions. Standard tests typically target three consecutive regions: AZFa, AZFb, and AZFc, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of a set of specific sequences (STS). The absence (deletion) of any of these regions is associated with varying degrees of spermatogenic failure.
