This test measures the concentration of transferrin protein in serum. Transferrin is produced in the liver and acts as the primary and only iron transporter in blood plasma. It binds to iron ions (Fe³⁺) and transports them from absorption sites (intestines) and storage sites (liver, spleen) to the bone marrow for hemoglobin synthesis and to all cells that require it. Its level inversely reflects the body's iron stores. It is also a negative acute-phase protein, meaning it decreases during inflammation.
