Blood Calcium Test - Total Calcium Test

A total blood calcium test measures the total concentration of calcium in the serum, the most abundant mineral in the body and essential for many bodily functions. Approximately 50% of the calcium in the blood is free (ionic) and biologically active, while the remainder is bound to proteins (primarily albumin). Its levels are closely correlated with phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D levels.
