Measurement of total bilirubin concentration in serum. Bilirubin is a byproduct of heme breakdown in aging red blood cells, transported to liver for conjugation and excretion. This measurement reflects sum of direct (conjugated) and indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin. Elevation above normal level diagnoses jaundice and requires further detailed investigation.
