The VDRL (Venture-Research Laboratory) or RPR (Rapid Plasma-Reactive Rhyagin) test is a non-specific (non-treponemic) serological test for syphilis. It does not directly detect antibodies against the causative bacterium (Treponema pallidum), but rather detects antibodies (rhyagins) produced by the body in response to cell damage caused by the infection. It is used as a routine screening test due to its speed and low cost, but any positive or suspicious result requires confirmation with a specific (treponemic) test such as FTA-ABS or TP-PA.
