A quantitative test that measures the creatinine level in serum. Creatinine is a non-enzymatic breakdown product of creatine and creatine phosphate, which are compounds that store energy in muscles. It is produced at a relatively constant rate depending on an individual's muscle mass. Creatinine is almost entirely filtered from the blood by the kidneys through glomerular filtration, with only a very small amount secreted by the renal tubules. Therefore, the serum creatinine level inversely reflects the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which is the best measure of kidney function.
