The procollagen III N-terminal peptide (PIIINP) test is a quantitative measurement of the serum level of this peptide. PIIINP is a component of the procollagen III molecule secreted by hepatocytes during collagen synthesis. Elevated PIIINP levels in the blood reflect the activity of fibrogenesis (scar tissue formation) in the liver, rather than being a measure of the actual amount of fibrosis present.
