Heart Function NT-proBNP Test

The N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) test is a quantitative measurement of the level of this peptide in blood serum or plasma. This hormone is primarily produced by the ventricles of the heart in response to the stretching and pressure caused by increased blood volume or pressure within the heart, as in cases of heart failure. Its level reflects the degree of stress placed on the myocardium.
