This serological test measures the presence and quantity of IgG autoantibodies directed against aquaporin-4 receptors (Aquaporin-4 IgG Abs), formerly known as NMO-IgG. Aquaporin-4 is a water channel in the membranes of astrocytes in the central nervous system, particularly in the spinal cord and optic nerve. Detection of these antibodies is a key diagnostic criterion and a high-quality marker for NMOSD, distinguishing it from multiple sclerosis (MS) and other inflammatory diseases.
