Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is a technique used to analyze cervical smear cells. Instead of directly swabbing the cell sample onto a slide, the cells are collected in a special liquid medium. This allows for the removal of impurities (such as blood and mucus) and the creation of a thin, homogeneous layer of cells on the slide for automated processing and microscopic examination. This method increases the sensitivity for detecting cellular abnormalities and reduces the percentage of abnormal samples compared to traditional smears.
