Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is a technique used to analyze cervical smear cells. Instead of directly scanning the sample onto a glass slide, the cells are collected in a container with a special preservative solution. This method removes impurities (such as mucus and blood) and produces a homogeneous monolayer on the slide, significantly improving the accuracy of microscopic evaluation of potential cellular abnormalities compared to the traditional Papanicolaou smear method.
