Immunohistochemical assay for OCT4 (Octamer-Binding Transcription Factor 4, also known as POU5F1) aims to detect this pivotal nuclear transcription factor for the preservation of embryonic stem cell characteristics. It is used as a highly sensitive and specific marker for the diagnosis of germ cell tumors (GCTs), particularly seminoma of the testis and ovary, and embryonal carcinoma. It is also expressed in embryonic stem cells and some primary germ cells.
