Immunohistochemical testing for NUT (Nuclear Protein in Testis) or the use of an antibody to detect the BRD4-NUT fused protein is used to diagnose NUT carcinoma (NC), formerly known as mesothelioma of the breast. Diagnosis relies on the detection of specific speckled (dotted) nuclear expression of the fused protein, resulting from the t(15;19) translocation that mixes the BRD4 gene on chromosome 19 with the NUTM1 gene on chromosome 15.
