Immunohistochemical assays for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) are used to detect this fibrillar intermediate protein, a major component of the scaffold of astrocytes and glial derivatives in the central and peripheral nervous systems. GFAP is a highly specific and sensitive marker for identifying glial cell tumors (gliomas) such as astrocytomas, gliomas, and ependymomas.
