Immunohistochemistry is used to detect the expression of BAP1 (BRCA1 Associated Protein 1) in cell nuclei. Loss of nuclear expression of the protein (loss of nuclear staining) usually indicates a pathogenic mutation in the BAP1 gene. It is used as a diagnostic marker and a prognostic aid in a range of tumors, including melanoma, mesothelioma, kidney cancer, and other tumors.
