Immunohistochemistry is an immunochemical assay used to detect ATRX (Alpha Thalassemia/Mental Retardation syndrome X-linked) protein expression in cell nuclei within a tissue sample. It relies on the reaction of specific antibodies with the target antigen. Loss of nuclear ATRX protein expression is an important marker in the diagnosis and classification of low-grade gliomas and some other neuroblastomas, and is associated with mutations in the corresponding gene.
