A highly sensitive quantitative test that measures very low concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) in blood serum, with precision down to 0.1 mg/L or less. While standard CRP measures acute and active inflammation (such as infection), hs-CRP is specifically designed to detect low chronic levels of systemic inflammation, which are associated with atherosclerosis (plaque formation) and cardiovascular disease risk. It reflects the activity of the inflammatory process in the blood vessel walls.
